3 Different Treatment Methods For Knee Pain Relief

December 16, 2022

Woman suffering from pain in knee

Knee pain is a common problem that can have many different causes. While some causes of knee pain are minor and will resolve on their own, others may require treatment in order to prevent further damage or disability.

If you are experiencing knee pain, it is important to see your doctor, so they can determine what is causing it and recommend appropriate treatment options. Treatment for knee pain will vary depending on the underlying cause and your doctor’s recommendations.

In most cases, knee pain is relieved through non-surgical methods. With proper treatment, knee pain sufferers can improve their quality of life. Here, we will discuss 3 different treatment methods for knee pain relief.

Cortisone Shots

Cortisone injections are a great treatment option for knee pain. They can be used to relieve pain and inflammation in the knee joint. Cortisone is a type of steroid used to ease pain and inflammation for a longer time than oral pain relievers. It is injected into the knee joint, where it works by reducing the number of inflammatory chemicals that are produced by the body. This can help to reduce pain and swelling in the knee joint.

Cortisone injections are usually given as a series of three injections, spaced about three weeks apart. The effects of each injection last for about three months before wearing off. After this, another series of cortisone injections may be needed to maintain relief from symptoms.

Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation involves injecting a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid into the knee joint. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body and lubricates and cushions the joints.

Your doctor will determine which viscosupplementation agent is best for you. The injections are usually given once or twice a week for three to five weeks. Some patients may experience relief from their symptoms after just one injection, while others may require multiple treatments before seeing any improvement.

Patients who undergo viscosupplementation typically report experiencing less pain and improved joint function following treatment. Overall, viscosupplementation is considered to be a safe and effective treatment option for those suffering from knee osteoarthritis pain.

PRP Therapy

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is derived from the patient’s own blood and contains a high concentration of growth factors that promote healing. Studies have shown that PRP injections can reduce knee pain and improve function in patients with osteoarthritis and a variety of injuries.

PRP therapy is a simple, non-surgical procedure that takes about 30 minutes to complete. First, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge, which spins it at high speeds to separate out the PRP. The concentrated PRP is then injected into the knee joint using ultrasound guidance.

Patients typically experience minimal discomfort and can return to their normal activities immediately afterward. Most patients report significant improvements in their symptoms within 4-6 weeks after treatment. PRP therapy is often used for patients with knee pain due to sports injuries.
