Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Meli is committed to providing the latest innovative techniques in orthopedic care, including regenerative medicine. At Paul Meli Orthopedic Surgery, we offer cutting-edge options such as platelet-rich plasma therapy and stem cell therapy in our Ft. Lauderdale office.
In orthopedics, regenerative medicine is used to relieve pain and restore function for a number of acute and chronic ligament, tendon, and cartilage conditions.
Specifically, stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are revolutionizing the way we treat orthopedic problems of the joints by stimulating the body’s natural healing process to regenerate healthy tissue at the site of an injury.
Let’s take a closer look at each of these regenerative medicine treatments available at Paul Meli Orthopedic Surgery:
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
PRP therapy is a revolutionary treatment for arthritis and sports injuries. Within the blood, platelets contain growth factors that accelerate the healing process.
Derived from your own blood, platelet-rich plasma is a concentrated solution of platelets that can be utilized to treat injury and pain in an outpatient setting. The blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge at high speed to separate the platelets from other blood cells.
The increased concentration of platelets is then precisely injected into the area that needs repair, such as a knee, shoulder, elbow, or ankle, triggering and enhancing the healing process. Since your own blood is used, PRP therapy has been shown to be safe with no risk of transmissible infection. In some cases, PRP therapy may also be used to facilitate healing after surgery.
PRP therapy is commonly used to treat the beginning stages of osteoarthritis, sprains and strains, tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, mild rotator cuff injuries, and minor anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.
After PRP therapy, it may take a few weeks to a few months for healing to occur. Depending on your injury, you might need more than one injection to experience maximum relief and healing.
Stem Cell Therapy
Like PRP therapy, stem cell therapy can stimulate healing and reduce pain in soft tissues and joints. Stem cells are more potent than platelet-rich plasma, so the procedure is typically used for more serious orthopedic injuries or conditions, such as advanced arthritis, partial ligament or tendon tears, rotator cuff tears, or cartilage damage.
There are different types of stem cells. The ones we use at Paul Meli Orthopedic Surgery, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), are derived from your own bone marrow. They have the ability to eventually become cartilage, bone, ligaments, and tendons.
Dr. Meli will obtain a sample from your pelvic area and concentrate it in a centrifuge to isolate the MSCs. Using ultrasound to guide him, Dr. Meli will then inject the stem cells at the site of injury to help repair injured or damaged tissues.
Although stem cell therapy is still considered investigational, the evidence is promising. Most patients experience decreased pain and an increase in function several weeks after treatment.
